Current Activities and Projects
Dr. Wang's recent research efforts concentrate on nanostructured materials, with emphasis being placed on atomic level characterization/visualization of nanostructured materials. His research work in nanostructured materials provides insights for correlating properties and structure at nanometer scale. Those results have been highlighted both as cover and review in journals such as Science, Nano Letters, and Journal of Physical Chemistry B.
Dr.Wang was the recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship from Germany in 1994 and worked at the Max-Planck-Institute for Metal Research in Stuttgart of Germany from 1994 to 1996, where his research focused on using high-resolution and analytical electron microscopy to study interfaces and boundaries in ceramics. From 1996 to 1997, Dr. Wang worked as a research scientist at the National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials, under the auspices of Japanese Science and Technology Agency, where his research efforts primarily focused on establishing the relationships between microstructural parameters and superplastic deformation behavior of silicon nitride and silicon carbide ceramics. He was a research scientist in the Materials Research Center at Lehigh University from 1997 to 2001. At Lehigh, his research concentrated on developing super-creep resistant ceramics by the strategy of selective impurities doping.
Dr. Wang joined PNNL in June 2001. He manages EMSL's transmission electron microscopy (TEM) facilities and his current research interests include application of TEM imaging and spectrosopic methods, as well as focused ion and x-ray spectroscopy, to study materials microstructure and behavior in such areas as impurity/dopant segregation, grain-boundary or interface mediated mass transport, and defect clustering. Dr. Wang holds one Japanese patent and has authored/co-authored over 120 journal publications and 90 professional conference presentations including one invited review paper on defect analysis in silicon nitride related ceramics.
