Current Activities and Projects

O’Leary is the Capability Lead for Computer and Network Services (CaNS)for EMSL. In this capacity, he manages a $1.5 million EMSL operations budget and is charged with: maintaining CaNS capabilities to assist EMSL staff and users with their information technology needs; making strategic investments to improve efficiency or add new capabilities, facilitating scientific discovery; providing ongoing maintenance of CaNS systems to keep EMSL capabilities working properly; managing allocation of CaNS resources (people, equipment, parts, and laboratory space); ensuring knowledgeable staff, supplies, and workplaces are available for EMSL staff and visitors.

O’Leary is also the PNNL Portfolio Manager for Scientific and Technical (S&T)Computing in the Information Management Services Organization where he acts as an interface between scientific and technical computing needs and PNNL infrastructure planning and existing service frameworks. As a Technical Group Manager, O’Leary manages 20 line staff and an additional 4 matrixed staff.

In addition to managing an EMSL operations budget, he also manages a $650,000 service center and provides staff to work on EMSL, PNNL, and externally-funded projects. O’Leary participates on the infrastructure, security, and high performance computing cluster teams, providing support for more than 100 Unix/Linux/Win servers, security infrastructure, including four Nessus security scanners located in different security zones, and over 40 computer clusters providing more than 5000 CPU cores for scientific data processing.
O’Leary’s electronic warfare experience, Electronics Engineering Technology degree, and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certificate allows O’Leary to participate as a subject matter expert in radio frequency activities for PNNL.

Research Interests

Lead the CaNS Special Project team which researches new data, network, and information technologies and methodologies and their potential application to the EMSL facility.

Past Experience

Shaun’s sixteen years of experience prior to working at PNNL (1986 to 1998) were focused on various Department of Defense projects as an Electronic Warfare Specialist with the U.S. Army and Navy. Shaun’s previous position was as the sole Communications Signals Analyst (COMSAT) for the Defense Attaché’s Technical Liaison Office at the United States Embassy in Bangkok Thailand. He is Capability Lead for Computer and Network Services at PNNL, EMSL (1998 to present).

Awards, Honors, & Appointments

FCC General Radio Telephone Certificate with a Ships RADAR Endorsement. This certificate conveys the authority from the FCC to operate and make repairs to ground-based and aircraft/shipborne RADAR and communications transmitters.
